CHFA has a proud history of offering a variety of exciting education abroad opportunities for students to experience new places and cultures, meet people from around the world, advance their studies in new contexts, and gain a global perspective.

Earlier this semester, Dr. Kathy Callahan and Dr. Marjorie Hilton from the Department of History, along with faculty from the School of Engineering, led a group of students to London over Spring Break. Students on the trip visited such locations as Runnymeade, the site of the signing of the Magna Carta; the Imperial War Museum; Westminster Hall, the oldest building on the Parliamentary estate; Queen’s House in Greenwich, home to an internationally renowned art collection; the Sky Garden, London’s highest public garden; and Brick Lane, a historic street full of quirky shopping and eateries. They also performed research for their course projects at the National Archives and the Black Cultural Archives.

“Studying abroad was one of the most influential and amazing experiences I have had at Murray State University,” said Kelli Gore, a senior from Bowling Green, Kentucky, who’s double-majoring in Management/Human Resources and Criminal Justice. The London program challenged students through cultural and academic study to contrast the U.S. and U.K., two countries that are often mistaken by Americans as having the “same culture.”

“I had never been abroad before my trip to London,” said Gore. “One of my favorite places that we visited was St. Paul’s Cathedral. Climbing up 528 steps (while jet-lagged) to look out on the beautiful city of London was my favorite memory, and that one visit also allowed me to learn an expansive amount of history in a rather short amount of time.”

“Studying abroad not only contributed to my knowledge of history in London, but I also had the chance to compare the criminal justice system and the business world of the UK to that of the US. Having this opportunity gave me a different perspective and affected how I will aim to have an impact on these fields in my future career. To any other students considering studying abroad… do it and do it with no regrets! The memories and experiences will last a lifetime and that is worth a much greater value than the cost of taking the trip.”
