Dr. Olga Koulisis, Assistant Professor of History, presented a paper titled “Vanguard of the Bourgeoise: Morgan Bankers, Communities of Interest, and Managing Democratic Publics” at the Business History Conference’s annual meeting in Providence, Rhode Island from March 14th – 16th, 2024.

The paper, part of a panel focused on Narrating Finance and Financial Crisis, examined the financial narratives J.P. Morgan banker Thomas Lamont constructed and promoted among fellow bankers and the wider U.S. investing public following World War I. Dr. Koulisis argued that Lamont’s narratives contributed to a language of interwar internationalism, shaped a shared elite banking culture of sovereign debt risk assessment, and promoted the creation of broader educational infrastructure for bond selling.
